Podcast Recap

Mortified that I mixed up Canadian listener, Kendra, with New Englander listener, Maddy, during last episode’s walk in Descanso, I make good on my promise to deliver a sunny walk for winter-bound, Kendra by strolling through the charming shopping district of Montrose, California. Then, struck by my feelings of discomfort over the matter, decide to find a nice, quiet spot to podcast about perfectionism. Instead, you get the ring-side seat to the beginnings of a true binge based in frustration, finished off by how I outsmarted those frackin Robot Aliens this time.

THE PROBLEM OF PERFECTIONISM IN EATING DISORDERS By Betty Hughes, Ph.D.. LMHC. An extremely interesting clinical view about perfectionism and how it plays out in eating disorders. Eye-opening!

Laurie! There’s that frustration again! I feel your pain Laurie and I share your frustrations! I work from home and between the roosters next door, helicopter day and the construction going on about a block away, there’s no concentration until I put on my headphones! Be strong Laurie and take that deep breath. Some days we just can’t have it all our way! Take care.

Hi Ava! Yep, that frustration is a way of life 🙂 Thanks for stopping in to say hello. I used to work from home too, and construction noise is awful! But remember, this show is warts and all, so somedays I’m frustrated, some days I’m elated, some days I’m ho hum, but all in all, I’m pretty happy with my experiment. Actually, this was one of my favorite episodes, because the expressing of the frustration you hear, actually was during a temptation to binge, and it kept me from it. Great to see you, my friend!

Whenever you talk about perfectionism (like in this episode) it really resonates with me. In my work “I either show A+ or go home” (like you said before). But my perfectionism stretches farther than that. It also affects my private life. Let me give you one example. I often plan ahead for my family, decide how and when we have to do certain things. Then, when my kids and my husband don’t behave in a way that fits my plans for us I get soooo frustrated with them. But I also get frustrated with myself. Because I don’t want to be that ranting person. She is not nice, she is not someone I am proud of. I want to be a relaxed and calm mother and wife. I want to be someone that is free of perfectionism. But I am not and so I beat myself up about that. And herein lies the real irony: Even when it comes to letting go of perfectionism I am a perfectionist! Isn’t that crazy??

Hi Happy, glad to see you are commenting as you move through the shows. I think you would LOVE my friend Alen’s podcast, Progress, Not Perfection. It used to be called, Quit Binge Eating, until Alen realized the Perfectionism is his main issue. He interviewed me when I was first starting out for episode 42 and a bit later for his episode 49. But he also has wonderful coaches and experts on about perfectionism, confidence, building good habits etc. xoxoxoxoxoxo

So funny you should mention that – I have just started listening to Alen’s podcast as well. I think you complement each other and I am getting a lot out of following the pair of you. Hugs. xoxoxo

I’m so glad Happy. I love Alen’s work and we have become good friends since my first interview. He is just as genuine and caring as he seems, and he get some really wonderful guests on his show. Reaching out is how we all build our networks of support and I applaud how well you are doing with it. xoxoxoxox
