I was really touched by how Mark was there for you. It’s so easy to complain about spouses, so it was really nice to be reminded of why we keep them around ha!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Abby! I was super touched by Mark’s action too. His response was better than any amount of chips, and proves to me that connection and being understood go a long way in helping us deal with some of the frantic food emotions that swirl in our compulsive brains. Thanks for connecting with me too!

We are really lucky to have good husbands. A “friend” ditched me for our hiking plans yesterday. She had ditched me last weekend too and I spent the day in bed depressed. Yesterday when she ditched me I was already dressed and had been getting the dogs gear ready. I sat on the couch and cried and said to Luke how I was really looking forward to this new friendship and hiking and my feelings were hurt, but that i Had to go somewhere and be active so It didn’t end up like the week before. Luke got dressed, loaded the dogs up, and we made the long drive to the nature preserve by HER house that I had found to be considerate and did the hike anyway. Once we got to the end of the trail which ends on this beautiful beach Luke turned to me and said “you know what? I’m glad Karen didn’t come, because it made room for me to come, and this has been really nice” It’s moments like these that really keep us going

Wow what validation from Mark when he recognised how important your work on these podcasts and associated activities is to you.

Well done with your battle in the face disappointment and frustration. I couldn’t help but pick up on your comments about wanting to sing. From what I heard on one of your podcasts you can hold a tune. Why don’t you see if there is a choir you can join? If you don’t read music too well then a gospel choir might suit you. If you do, then you have many more choices. I hate singing solo as I am too self conscious but I love being part of a choir!

Hi Sue, I read your comment to Mark, and he was pleased. As to the singing, yes I would love to be part of a chorus. I’ve looked into it, and most that I can find around here are either auditioned, or seem to require some music training. I have several years of drama training, but my teacher would never let me sing and made me mouth the words in musicals. This pretty much shut me up ever since. I just now texted, Sandy, the brave companion whom I met, because she is a musician, and asked if she knew of any good teacher or chorus that would let me sing to get over my terror of it. Thanks for the idea. What’s the harm in trying, eh? 🙂

It’s amazing how damaging these comments made by people who we respect, be it teachers or parents can be. If you want to try then go for it – especially if you can find something that is at a level you can enjoy without feeling too out of your depth. I am thriving under the leadership of a director of music who keeps telling me that he has more confidence in my ability than I have. It is doing me a world of good. 🙂

    Hello Laurie –
I enjoy listening to your podcast. Keep it up. You are doing a great job.

You may want to consider not having any chips in the house at all. Not even organic or other chip. I like to eat and munch on snacks and the best thing for me is to have other snacks that I like available to me instead of tortilla chips which are my favorite “bad” snack. If I don’t have them in the house, I don’t eat them and they are not there to tempt me. I usually have the small baby carrots which I find to be delicious.

Hi Jerry, Thanks so much for stopping by! Your comment gave me an idea for my next podcast topic, the difference for me, between trigger foods and binge foods. These particular chips are not trigger foods for me, but they, along with almost anything in my home, can be a binge food. I do my best, like you mention, not to have triggers in my house, at least not in my plain sight, since my hubby has his own snacks. That being said, part of my current process is feeling and dealing with the emotions under my compulsion and binge triggers. Having a small amount of this food, that I integrate into my regular menu, is helping me to avoid the whole “good food, bad food” thinking that is one of my biggest triggers. BUT I do have plenty of carrots and veggies that I eat daily, and if these chips were to become a trigger food, out they would go! (at least for now). Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and share your ideas, I appreciate it.

I’m sure you already have, but have you made kale chips before? They’re super crunchy and you can add salt.

    Laurie,

I really felt touched by your podcast today and I just wanted to reassure you that this is not failure by any means! Compulsive over eating is much like arthritis to me in my PT brain…..you can never truly fix it but you can learn how to manage it. You will get flare ups occasionally , but you have to know that they will decrease with time.

I think it’s great that you tried the suggestions and noticed that you at least thought about it before doing it! Have you tried leaving yourself notes on the cupboards with positive quotes or questions like, “what if you went for.l a walk instead if eating? Do you really want to do this?”

Hi Maureen, isn’t it cool that I got help from the suggestions that came for you?! I’m so glad you asked the question. I love your note idea. As a reminder of my goals, I used to keep a photo on my chip cupboard door of me sailing in Hawaii at my first goal weight of 191, where I look so happy. Your comment makes me think it’s time to find it again and slap it back up there. 🙂

That was a surprisingly wonderful birthday song! Isn’t it amazing how many gifted people there are out there who may not have the “star status” of the big names but are every bit as great? That was a real treat.

My take-away from the show today was when you were talking about how you curtailed how much you were eating and drinking because you understood the reason you were doing that. That’s a biggie. Though you ended up using the food to calm yourself some, you were STILL in control. That’s such a huge step forward. Congrats, GF! Makes a good point about trying to understand our triggers.
