Podcast Recap

Live from the Next to Upper Zen spot, I ponder letting go of ‘woe’ and bringing in the ‘yay’ just in time for our first annual Holiday Extravaganza. We get caught up with Kendra the Librarian, Hear greetings from Stéfanie from Quebec, Alen Standish, Mark, and our fake son, Steve. I have fun getting all Jib Jabbery with the holiday selfies. Suz goes on the bravery report for whipping up the courage to speak to us for the first time on Speakpipe before she plays her holiday concert piece, ‘Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ on piano. I put myself on the bravery report for daring to sing ‘Winter Wonderland’. Fionna rounds out our annual concert by singing a great rendition of ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’ while playing the ukulele. I tell about last year’s Christmas show for Daily Adventure Tales and play a bonus clip of a poem I wrote as a youth called ‘Twas the Groove Before Christmas. Special holiday music by the United States Marine Band.

Just a quick comment to say WOW, you have come a long way with your singing! You have better breath support and pitch control and everything! You sounded very nice! Keep up the great work. 🙂

Thanks so much Suz! I think I have met my first goal to sing well enough not to be embarressed to sing in public. And my teacher says with practice I can learn to sing well. That would be cool. AND the lessons really help my voice work too. Plus HOORAY for your bravery, I really enjoyed your voice and your piano playing. You have a musical gift for sure and I’m so proud of you for sharing it with us. That takes guts and a belief in yourself (whether you feel it yet or not) xoxoxoxoxox

Yes! Yes! Yes! Laurie that was awesome!!! I can REALLY tell your singing lessons are making a difference. Your voice sounds rich in tone, well supported and free of tension. A clear improvement from “In My Own Little Corner.” Great job! And what a joyous episode you put together! I enjoyed listening to all the clips from bc’s so much. Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks Fionna, you will appreciate my teacher’s comments. She says I have no idea how fast I’ve progressed because I actually practice! (I record all of my lessons and try to do them every other day or more as I get stronger and also depending on how much I’ve been using my voice for the show or VO). As a compulsive perfectionist, I cannot FATHOM paying for singing lessons and NOT practicing. Wah? But I guess many depend only on the session to improve. I love my Roland 05 – with the lavilier mic I use for recording my show, I can just sing and hear all my teacher tells me during my lesson so I can correct that during my practice.

    Lots to say!
-Merry xmas to the BC’S!! Thanks for being in my life in 2014. I am happy to have met you all.
    – Wonderful joyful episode with beautiful voices, Fionna, Suz, yours, and Mark has a beautiful deep radio voice too 🙂
    – it’s so nice to hear you recap your year and think about all this progress you have made. I admire the way you face the holidays with calmness. For my part, all the anxiety about xmas (over) eating has completely disappeared the day I decided that I would be on a diet at xmas. I am so proud and happy that you are in the IEzone (I like that name) and aim for that too, but I just am not there. I wish I was…. I can stay within my IEzone and do really well as long as there is no social gatherings or continuous temptations. I am not strong enough to deal with moderation in those specific contexts… it’s a little like people that are alcohol abstinent VS moderators. For now, for xmas parties, it is best for me to not sabotage my hard work. I am very happy I made this decision and feel no frustration about it. Actually, I feel relief…. 🙂
    – hi ha was my addition in jingle bells lol. I am happy you liked it!
    – it’s funny how a realize that my breathing is VERY heavy in my recordings. I am not judging myself in a ‘oh no I hate my voice’ way, because it is what it is… But in a very objective way, I can hear how I inspire loudly a ton of air and it’s very obvious. My 1st thought to myself was that this was probably a vestige from my being 300 pounds, when breathing was more strenious, and I have not shed this unconscious habit. Strange and Interesting. There must be some tricks within this community of singers 🙂

Oh, I must say I’m a a bit sorry that all French speaking singers of Jingle Bells don’t yell “Yee Hah!” but I’m glad you did, it was so cute! As to diet, I remember the same relief when I was getting down to goal at WW. I kept my focus on the prize and that particular year, did really well during the holidays. Almost a Zen IEZone thing. Since I had so FEW calories (points) available to me, I really was choosey about what went in my mouth that year. Not the best bread? Forget it! Dessert? Have I had it before? Forget it! Now, to your breathing, you over project (as I do, I think it is a teacher type thing), so try recording further away from your phone or recording device, and also we learn in voice acting to keep our mouths open continually in the booth – this limits mouth noise of opening and gets you used to “sipping” air all of the time as you go. Another trick, is pretend you are speaking to me right by your side – like we are sitting together over coffee. Use this loudness – it helps cure over projection. All this being said, your voice sounds great, and you are more aware then we are (but I get wanting to improve your sound). Merry Christmas Mon Amie, and thanks again for all of the participation in the Holiday Show, I so loved seeing your elf costume and hearing your song.xoxoxoxox

I’m so glad you enjoyed the Holiday Extravaganza. This was a fun show to put together. I’m hoping that as BCs enjoy all of the different voices and the bravery of those who share themselves on the episodes, that more will take the chance and we can have more variety in future. I’m sure that much as you all love to hear me talk and talk and TALK and TALK, it is great to hear from other BCs too. It greatly adds to the sense of community and mutual support, which, besides helping myself, is my dream for this show. Merry Christmas, Dear Dawny, and I hope ALL of your Christmas dreams come true xoxoxoxox

    Hi, Laurie!

Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful podcast and to let you know that I listened to this particular episode on the eighth day of Chanukah walking down the street in Jerusalem. Very surreal to be enjoying the Marine choir whilst surrounded by hasidim. I’ve been listening to your show ever since Alen featured you on his. Slowly catching up. I like that you allow us to be active observers/participants in your journey. It is authentic in a different kind of way than listening to a Podcaster who has already completed that part of the journey and wants to pass on lessons learned the hard way. Thank you for sharing your process.

I’m barely on the computer or online these days, but I do listen to podcasts all day long while I take care of the house and family. Hope to really write you one of these days. You are on my to-do list!

    Love from Israel!

Welcome Stacey, I am SO excited to hear from you. I have seen in my stats that people in Israel download episodes of the show, but until now, have not heard from anyone there. I immediately texted my fake son, Steve, and let him know. He went there last year on vacation and enjoyed exploring there immensely. I’m glad you enjoy the format of the show and blog as well. I think you have hit on what makes our work here unique. We are going through it together. AND we are taking various paths to build better authentic relationships with food, our bodies, ourselves and with others. It is the global mix of people and ideas that is very exciting. For me, it is strange to think that my photos and tales of my life in Southern California would seen exotic to others. But I LOVE to see and hear about all of the places in the world the brave companions live and visit. It really is fun to see that while we are all so different, we have emotional threads in common and can support each other. I relate to your listening to podcasts while taking care of the home, I do that too. And I look forward to when you have the chance to take a breather and write some more of your own thoughts and experiences. Welcome again! xoxoxoxoxoxox
